I thought of starting a new mission today within the free browser-based MMORPG RuneScape. The mission is simple and rather pointless. All I do is stand in a spot alongside the road and wave to fellow adventurers, traders, craftsmen, and peasants.

It's a simple procedure. However, the various reactions from the pedestrians and ways to deal with them are complex. Standing on the road between Falador and Barbarian Village for an hour waving to almost everybody who walked or ran past me has mustered everything from insults to friendly compliments and from 'canz I has ur acount pl0z?' to inquires regarding my mental stability. It's a fun (but boring and time-wasting) experiment that may eventually lead to my once proposed idea about writing a philosophy paper on RuneScape. This study may have more ties with psychology than philosophy, but it's not a major contribution toward any questionable paper.
Every time I go on a waving spree, I'm going to report my results on this blog. My so-called technical reports are illegible scratches on sticky notes (partly due to my freezing hands), so they'll be brief.
Today's report includes the following:
- Approximately nine waves or hellos back to me.
- My waving seemed to have insulted one warrior who questioned what I was doing. When I responded with "Waving!", he said "whatever" and walked off the scene.
- One fellow approached me and asked me if I was high. I demanded to know why he would think such a thought, but he walked away without another word. One for me, zero for him.
- Another fellow had the fortune to run into me twice. On the second occasion, he ran up to me and asked me in an exclamatory way, "You're still here!?" As a result, he donated one gold piece to me. My first donation! He claimed that he likes to give money to the poor, and then briskly walked away.
- Some person asked me if skill capes were free-to-play. I said that they unfortunately were not. He then responded that they once were. Being a RuneScape player since 2005, an era before there were such an item as skill capes, I responded that they never were free-to-play. He would not hear the truth from me and kept his own stubborn position on the matter, walking away in a huff.
- Another asked me if I had a rune ax for him. What am I? A free candy dispenser?
- Some fellow admitted to me that he was ***, or, as I assume if it were not censored, that he's gay. I said that I was happy for him. He stated that he was kidding, in which I yelled at him that it is not a topic to kid about. We then had a nice conversation, but he had to log out soon afterwards.
- Another armored fighter walked up to me calling me the dreaded n-word ('noob') and declared that he could own me. I peacefully stated that I know that I'm a 'noob' and that he could, in fact, own me. I'm combat level 101 and he was around 67, but I don't like to start or provoke arguments. Plus, I'm not much of a fighter and I'm sure a level 67 could probably own me.

Haha, this is quite awesome.
ReplyDeleteIf a simple wave got you a donation, then imagine how much you could make by "busking"!
xD
